Well, there are hand held radio communication devices for just about every band now. 27MHz CB now have handhelds with 40ch. AM and 40ch. AM/SSB. There are UHF CB handhelds that have full 40 chnnel coverage and some with the first 16 channels only. There are also 55MHz hand held available unit and some on 433MHz.
More recently though some new handhelds have come out in the 433MHz frequency range which lies in the Amateur Radio Band. These hand helds are very low power and operate on FM. I haven't used one myself, but imagine they would operate quite well. The only draw back is the unfortunate case where one of the 20 channels lie right on repeater inputs in the 70cm amateur band, and you happen to operate on this device within range of a repeater or similiar.
Here is a brief list of some available equipment on the market, with more details.![]() |

Uniden UH-045 I have actually purchased a Uniden UH-045xr. It has been used for mostly car to car communications and does the job well enough, however, when you start picking up some distance you can lose signal of course. The CTCSS feature is quite handy, but it's unlikely that it would be needed a lot. Some features:
